In an effort to yet again expand its international presence, Microsoft has announced that it will be launching cloud services for the U.K. public from local data centers in late 2016. These services will include Office 365 and Azure, the tech giant’s cloud computing platform. Although Microsoft has data centers in 20 areas across the globe, it hasn’t really seen much play in the European marketplace.
The company does have data centers in Ireland and the Netherlands, but it looks like Microsoft wants a bigger piece of the European pie.
Not the first, but competition is good
Anyone with basic computer training will tell you how amazing cloud technologies are, and how many benefits they can yield in a commercial space. This is why the cloud marketplace is incredibly competitive, and the European cloud market is no different than anywhere else. In fact, Microsoft isn’t even the first American tech company to see the benefits of moving cloud services to Europe.
Amazon Web Services beat Microsoft to the punch, with Fortune magazine reporting that the company plans to open a new data center in the U.K. by 2017. Although Microsoft would never admit it, having competition in the area is going to be a good thing. Both Europeans and even people with Microsoft certified training around the world will be able to utilize these two companies moving into the same space to their advantage.
Europeans will be able to benefit from two of the best cloud service providers on the market right now competing for their attention. This is going to drive innovation, as well as good pricing models for them. Anyone with Microsoft training also has something to gain from this competition. Creating new and exciting ideas only happens if you’re afraid the other guy is going to think of them first, and having this constant back and forth in the U.K. market is going to drive Azure innovation.
